Talked about city life with Dawn last night. It seems some of her friends (married, with kids) are moving from the East Village to California for…space? She wondered what you might tell your own children when they ask you why they can’t have a back yard.

Are back yards so great? I seem to remember my grandparents having a back yard that I played in, but I’m not sure what, exactly, this playing entailed. It seems like you enjoy nature for a lot of your really early childhood, but one day you wake up somehow realizing that the outdoors is full of bugs, dirt, and hard rough things that will hurt if you touch them. At this point of my life, I’m thinking, sure, nature is nice to look at for a few minutes, but now what?
