One of the Korean masters says I have a face like a traditional Korean mask. This may or may not be a complement.

Seoul is kind of a sprawling city, some say L.A.esque. I wouldn’t know. The pedestrians are not as numerous or aggressive as those in New York, but this may be due to the wider streets with many more lanes for traffic. We drove past the giant statues that were erected for the Olympics.

The teenagers we are training with are so playful and happy when they are warming up. They remind me of wriggly, adorable puppies…deadly puppies…that can kill you.

Anyway, today is some kind of election day, so we did not train at the university. But while everyone there did their civic duty and voted, we were invited to Master Lee’s school/fitness center, where we practiced patterns (nice mat!) and then worked out. In case you were wondering, barefoot running on treadmills makes for FILTHY feet.

The first day we had much drama as K. had a problem with her plane ticket (airline’s mistake), and as a result had to get to Seoul via San Francisco. But we’re all here, and the first day of training was a rousing success. The Koreans we are training with are mostly older teenagers, and they are very sweet. I drilled with several partners, one of whom was a guy… but every single one of them was very gentle in spite of his/her blazing speed.

Also, we went to an outdoor market type place where we ate at a Buddhist vegan restaurant (because of the vegan, duh), and T. got her wallet (which thankfully contained nothing essential) stolen. Later we took the subway to several martial arts stores near the WTF headquarters. I’m not cut out for shopping. Luckily, I can claim unemployment as an excuse. 😛

Some observations.

In Seoul, the women are taller, paler, and thinner than I am. The paleness is accomplished with the use of umbrellas.

I can actually reach the hand staps in the subway cars, which also sport luggage racks.

Binary, not so much

There is a certain type of person who refuses to eat alone in restaurants.

Conversely, there are those who enjoy occasionally taking themselves out on a date.

Maybe you like to think of yourself as the former, but when a shiny looking sushi restaurant taunts you from right next to your bus stop, you give in to the temptation of sashimi a la carte and the mysterious, alluring sake of the day.

Oh, but it felt good.

If I go jogging now, will I be less hungry in time for 7:30 martial arts?
