MY Pick: The Host

So…the 2006 Korean monster flick “The Host” is my new favorite movie of all time. It’s easily the most manga-esque (or, in this case, manhwa-esque) live action film I’ve ever seen. Even if the ending is kind of a downer by American standards, I laughed and laughed the whole way through, because the Park family is hilarious. As soon as the the suicide in the third scene jumped to his death in disgust (final words: “Morons till the end”), I knew this was the movie for me. Even funnier is the mourning scene when the Parks believe their beloved child, Hyun-seo, has been eaten by the monster. Funniest. Scene. Ever.

That said, the characters – cartoonish as they are throughout most of the film – are also genuinely human and compelling enough to make me cry. Twice. During two viewings. Yeah, I’m a sap, but it’s just that good. And the conclusion…is actually memorable.

For fans of Wonhyo (or his bridge), the big showdown with the gross, slimy, yet oddly graceful beast takes place on Wonhyo Bridge. All the incompetant everymen who people this movieverse could have been played by David Foley. And, on the DVD extras, the director spends 5 minutes apologizing profusely to all the various people he wronged during the shoot. Can’t get any better than that.
